Since the beginning of time, okay, since I was in my early twenties, I have been very curious and inquisitive about the factors that make up our unconscious decisions and how this applies to how we socially interact with people and how we feel about people that we don’t know. Taking it a step further is the study of Situationism, which I really know nothing about but find it totally fascinating! Never a psychology major, I couldn’t have guessed that there are people out there that think about this 24/7, speak on it, and study it for a living. Whatever is out there, that helps to define or make better understood, that at our very basic core, we are a human and this factors or should factor into the laws we make and keep is something I want to know more about. That is why I visit the Situationist site on a somewhat regular basis, even though half the time I can’t wrap my brain around what it’s all about! As defined on their site, Situationism is premised on the social scientific insight that the naïve psychology—that is, the highly simplified, affirming, and widely held model for understanding human thinking and behavior—on which our laws and institutions are based is largely wrong.

Humans are strange beings... I don't think anything we do can be explained with one theory. I've always been fascinated by evil people. I've always wanted to understand the minds of people like Idi Amin or Hitler. What the hell were they thinking?! Why are some humans so evil? Is it a form of madness or do the rest of us repress our own evil?
I like wondering....
I think we are all capable of doing more harm than we know and more good than we know. I think the key is not necessarily to supress the evil, but to be very aware of what brings it out in us. Then it is by our own choice whether or not we live up to our potential good or we nurture the existing bad.

Oh, Elise, Have I got a book for you! Unfortunately, I can't remember what it's called or the author at the moment, but I'll find out and let you know.

Don't leave us hanging like that!
Got it! People of the Lie by M. Scott Peck. Read it! You will never forget it. And I want to discuss it with you. It's an older book, but you can probably get it on Amazon or at the library. It is riveting.
