On Leaving Iraq

A subject I haven't really wanted to tackle as I don't have any answers. But on the very basic human level I have an opinion about occupying Iraq. And that's that we've been there too long and we've spent too much money on war and too many of our soldiers have died. I know that's a simple statement. Most anyone could and would make the same statement. I can't answer the question of whether or not we should have gone in the first place. I'm not even sure I have an opinion on whether or not we should have gone in the first place. I always have knowlege about something before I form an opinion and I don't have enough here. All I know is that our military presence has not been modest and has not been temporary, like we were lead to believe it would be. Were we lied to? Did things just change? Does leaving guarantee a civil war and ethnic cleansing like feared? Or are those just excuses to stay? How will we know if we don't end the occupation? And if we leave...what's next? What's the plan? Does someone have a plan to leave based on something more substantial than the plan to stay? A friend recently sent me this link...Our Troops Must Leave Iraq. Although it doesn't offer any answers, it reminds of us how many of us feel...because if you are like me, you may have started to go numb...and that's never a good thing.

I hear ya. I have many opinions about Iraq, but they're based on personal experience. I lost a college friend there in May 2003, one of the first casualties. My brother is in the Army, serving on a post that sends soldiers to Iraq. I was there this summer and it was terrifying to see these young men...boys...going to war. It was even more horrifying to see women my mom's age...nurses...preparing to go to Iraq instead of loving their grandbabies. It's time to leave Iraq. Sigh...

I'm so sorry about your college friend. You were in Iraq this summer? Why? What did you do there?
